Richard Frank 'Dick' Maize

Community volunteer, 67Richard Frank "Dick" Maize, 67, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 in Portland from stroke complications.

Mr. Maize was born April 14, 1937 in Astoria to J. Frank Maize and Elsie Hjorten Maize. His mother survives, living in Seaside.

Mr. Maize graduated from Warrenton High School in 1955.

On June 17, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Patty Davis, in Astoria. She survives, living in Warrenton.

Mr. Maize attended Oregon State University and later attended Sacramento State University on a basketball scholarship. He returned to Warrenton where he worked in the grocery business for more than 30 years. He ran the family business, Maize's Market, and later Westlake Grocery. He then went into real estate sales, working at Coldwell Banker-Kent Price Realty in Seaside.

Mr. Maize served on the Warrenton City Commission and the Warrenton-Hammond School Board and was a member of the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a Junior Chamber International Senator, a member of Astoria Elks Lodge No. 180 and a past member of the Astoria Golf & Country Club. He was a member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church and served as a church trustee.

Family members say Mr. Maize's greatest passion besides his family was his love of golf - he never wanted anything bad to happen on Wednesday, which was his golf day. He also loved horses and hunting and valued community involvement and helping others.

In addition to his wife and mother, Mr. Maize is survived by two sons, Steve Maize and his wife, Connie, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Russell Maize and his partner, Chris Summerer, of Long Beach, Wash.; a daughter, Julie Roberts, and her husband Jim Kutella of Tualatin; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Dean Cawley of Tualatin; five grandchildren, Thomas, Ciara and Steve Maize of Phoenix and Weston Roberts and Christian Kutella of Tualatin; a great-grandson, Thomas Colvin Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Viewing and visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary. A funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary, followed by burial at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton. A reception will follow at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Warrenton Methodist Church in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
