Eugene 'Gene' Louis Matthews
Fisheries consultant, 90Eugene "Gene" Louis Matthews, 90, of Astoria, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 in Astoria.
Mr. Matthews was born May 19, 1913 in Portland to Edward and Alice Compton Matthews. He attended school in Astoria and gillnet fished during high school.
In 1935, he married Selma Olsen. She died in 1992.
Mr. Matthews went to work for Columbia River Packers (now Bumblebee Seafoods) in 1935. He worked through the production department and then into sales, becoming sales manager for the fresh and fresh-frozen end of the business. He retired at the age of 63 and became a fisheries consultant for about 20 years, mainly for Los Angeles Smoking & Curing, Astoria Seafoods and Fishhawk Fisheries.
Family members said he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly fishing, hunting and clam digging. He was a lifetime member of the Astoria Elks, a member of the Astoria Golf & Country Club and a past member of the National Fisheries Institute Board of Directors.
Mr. Matthews is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Gary Deane and Joan and Bill Miller, all of Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Diane Matthews of Astoria; five grandchildren, John Avery, Alice Adair, Joanne Miller, Greg Matthews and his wife, Saara, and Brian Matthews and his wife, Stacey; and seven great-grandchildren. A granddaughter died earlier.
Visitation is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries in Astoria.
A funeral is 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries.
Private family committal will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
