Betty Rose Narkaus

Dressmaker, 74Betty Rose Narkaus, 74, of Astoria, died Friday, June 10, 2005, in Astoria.

Mrs. Narkaus was born July 28, 1930 in Haines to John and Evelyn Nedrow. She grew up in the Baker City area and attended Eastern Oregon College, where she met Kenneth Ralph Narkaus. They married July 31, 1949. He survives, residing in Astoria.

In 1951, the Narkauses moved to Astoria. Mrs. Narkaus was a dressmaker and taught sewing at Clatsop Community College. Family members said she enjoyed working with children and was involved in Boy and Girl Scouts. She was a member of Zonta International and the Daughters of the American Revolution. After retirement, she enjoyed gardening, quilting and genealogy. She worked on the Clatsop County Genealogical Society's project for the descendants of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Narkaus is survived by one daughter, Kenna Gillespie of Salem; two sons, Gary Narkaus of Montclair, N.J., and Larry Narkaus of Troy, Mont.; a sister, Bonnie Kelso of Boise, Idaho; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.

A private family service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
