James Nels Nielsen

Electronics technician, 87James Nels Nielsen, 87, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 in Grants Pass.

Mr. Nielsen was born May 26, 1917, in Portland to Martin and Lillian (Herda) Nielsen. He was raised in Astoria.

On May 26, 1947, he married Edna Tracy Weishuhn. She died Sept. 11, 2001.

Mr. Nielsen was a longshoreman in Astoria, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a radio operator in the Merchant Marines. He then worked as an electronics technician at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., until he retired in 1979. He moved to Grants Pass in January.

Mr. Nielsen is survived by two daughters, Patricia Valk of Grants Pass and Donna Charlin of Littleton, Colo.; one sister, Margaret Miller of Seaside; two grandsons, Jason and Mathew Valk of Livermore; and a great-granddaughter, Dawn Spence of Livermore.

A memorial will be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 25 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Astoria. A memorial plaque will be placed at the National Cemetery in Eagle Point.
