Sandra J. Ryder, 64, of Ocean Park, Wash., died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 in Ilwaco, Wash.

She was born May 5, 1948, in The Dalles, to Darrel and Betty (Gibson) Bourland. Her parents survive, residing in Vancouver, Wash.

As a young girl she loved to ride horses, unless a cow was around. Later she moved to Vancouver, where she graduated from Hudson’s Bay High School.

On Dec. 4, 1966, she married Gary A. Ryder in Vancouver. He survives, residing in Ocean Park.

Mrs. Ryder was a homemaker. Later she became a sales associate and had a strong work ethic.

For a number of years she resided in Missoula, Mont., where she attended church, and lately she had been attending Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park.

Family members said she was happy wherever she was “planted,” and made friends immediately. She was gifted artistically since childhood, and her first projects were pencil drawings of horses. She created oil paintings and cards and taught classes in craft projects in Missoula and in Warrenton. A year ago she fulfilled her dream of retiring at the beach with her husband.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Traci Ryder Padrotti of Missoula; a son, Michael Ryder and his wife, Juleah, of Helena, Mont.; a sister, Karen McMakin and her husband, David, of Washougal, Wash.; three grandchildren; and numerous other members of her extended family.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Peninsula Baptist Church, 23802 Pacific Way in Ocean Park, with a reception following.

Penttila’s Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements. An online guest book is available at
