Myrtle Anna Saunders

Secretary, 79Myrtle Anna Saunders, 79, of Astoria, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 in Astoria.

She was born to George and Anna (Bacon) Bargquist Dec. 1, 1924 in Sacramento, Calif. She was raised in Sacramento and Rocklin, Calif. She attended Sacramento College and the University of California at Berkeley.

The granddaughter of pioneer Ilwaco residents, Jacob and Josephine Bacon, Mrs. Saunders often spent summers in Ilwaco. She met Bob Saunders there. In 1947, they married in Ilwaco. He died earlier.

Mrs. Saunders was a secretary at Ilwaco High School and retired in 1984. She was a member of Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed sewing, reading and gardening. She was a Boy Scout leader and member of the Mentor Club.

Mrs. Saunders is survived by two sons, Blane Saunders of Ilwaco and Joel Saunders; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Dale Tracy of Long Beach, Wash., and Paula and Ed Reagor of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Pauline Bargquist of Bellevue; one grandson, Patrick Saunders; and three great-grandchildren. One brother died earlier.

Graveside service is 11:30 a.m. Monday at Ilwaco Cemetery, followed by a celebration of her life at 1 p.m. at Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church in Seaview, Wash. A reception follows.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ilwaco Fire Department or Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church in care of Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, P.O. Box 417, Long Beach, WA 98631.
