June Gloria Schaefer
School and church volunteer, 77June Gloria Schaefer, 77, of Walla Walla, Wash., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.
Mrs. Schaefer was born Feb. 5, 1926 in Portland to William and Ellen Humasti Johnson. She attended Knappa schools, graduating from Knappa High School in 1943.
On April 1, 1944, she married Richard Schaefer in Walla Walla. He died in 1995.
Mrs. Schaefer was active in her children's schools as a room mother, in the PTA and as an advocate for students and teachers. Her efforts won her the Golden Acorn Award in 1971 after 20 years of volunteer service at Jefferson Elementary School in Walla Walla.
She was very active in groups at Christ Lutheran Church, including women's groups, Altar Care and the Prayer Chain. As her health failed, she became one of the number one callers for the Prayer Chain for many years.
Mrs. Schaefer is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Gene Wilkinson of Milton-Freewater, Linda and Larry Burton of Kennewick, Wash., and Karen Schaefer of Crescent City, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Dori Schaefer of Sunnyside, Wash.; a sister, Joyce Hoffman of Warrenton; a brother, Arthur Johnson of Astoria; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers and a sister died earlier.
Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla.
A funeral is 2 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Walla Walla, officiated by Pastor Tom Hiller.
Vault interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.
