Lyle Hensel Schwegler
Astoria native, 91Lyle Hensel Schwegler, 91, of Knappa, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 in Longview, Wash.
Mr. Schwegler was born Dec. 21, 1911 in Astoria to William and Caroline Mae Brown Schwegler. He lived in Deep River, Wash., until he was 6, then moved to the Astoria-Knappa area. He attended Svensen Grade School and Knappa High School, working the seining grounds on the Columbia River during his high school summers.
After high school, he went to set chokers for Crown Zellerbach in Seaside. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving in carpentry and heavy construction. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign and received the Bronze Battle Star for participation in the Northern Solomons campaign, a Good Conduct medal and two Overseas Service bars. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the Astoria area to work for Crown Zellerbach until his retirement at age 65.
In 1951, he married Erma Hoyt Johnson. She died in 1977.
In 1979, he married Ruth Elsie Strasser Kangas. She survives, living in Knappa.
Mr. Schwegler attended Crossroads Community Church in Svensen. Family members said he loved ice cream, dogs, mole trapping and watching pro wrestling.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Schwegler is survived by two sisters, Myra Krusic of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lois Mather of Boise, Idaho; and a son, Mark Schwegler of Warrenton. One sister and six brothers died earlier.
A memorial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crossroads Community Church. Private inurnment will be in Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
