Howard Werner Simonsen

Arbitrator, fisherman, 75Howard Simonsen, 75, of Hammond, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, in Portland.

Mr. Simonsen was born May 15, 1928 in Astoria to Chris and Olga Storm Simonsen. On June 26, 1949, he married Colleen Stanley in Warrenton. She survives, living in Hammond.

Mr. Simonsen grew up in Astoria, graduating from Astoria High School in 1946 and from Oregon State University in 1951. He worked as an arbitrator for the Oregon State Employment Division for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a gillnet fisherman most of his life, both locally and in Bristol Bay, Alaska. He also operated Hammond Fisheries with his son Robert "Robby" Simonsen.

Mr. Simonsen served on the board of the Warrenton-Hammond School District and was chairman for several years, and also served as Hammond Fire Chief and as a member of the Clatsop County Education Service District. He was a life member, ruling elder, treasurer and member of several committees of the Clatsop Plains Presbyterian Church; a member of the Gateway Masonic Lodge; life member of the Astoria Elks Lodge; and past member of the board of the local Duck Hunters Association.

Family members say Mr. Simonsen's hobbies included woodcutting, clam digging and duck hunting, especially at the Woody Island boat house. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a huge part of his life.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Terry Ferguson of Hammond; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kelly Simonsen of Hammond; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sonja Simonsen of Bend; a sister, Dolores Sage, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; six grandchildren and two spouses, Jonathon Brown, Mitchell Simonsen, and Mindy and Daniel Little, all of Hammond; Michael and Lori Simonsen of Warrenton; and Mark and Matthew Simonsen of Astoria; four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Tyla and Austin Little of Hammond, and Trinity Simonsen of Astoria; an aunt, Bernice "Aunt Bern" Enke of Hammond; and numerous nieces and nephews. An infant son and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Vickie Simonsen, died earlier.

A memorial is 1 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Astoria, 1103 Grand Avenue.
