Phillip Andrew Syvanen
Former Astoria resident, 72Phillip Andrew Syvanen, 72, of Oakland, Calif., died of lung cancer Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 in Oakland.
Mr. Syvanen was born Jan. 11, 1931 in Astoria. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1948, where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball and football. Following his graduation from Oregon State University in 1952, he was named one of the nation's top naval Reserve Officer Training Corps members and received an award from Adm. William "Bull" Halsey.
After completing his naval commitment, Mr. Syvanen moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the late 1950s. Family members say he loved to visit family and friends in Astoria.
Mr. Syvanen is survived by a son, Donald A. Syvanen of Loveland, Colo.; his companion of 40 years, Nancy Robbin of Oakland; two cousins, Sylvia Chestnut of Astoria and Dick Pavlat of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren.
No service will be held.
The Veterans Administration is in charge of cremation.
