Adella Mathilda Nord Wood
Director of nursing, 83Adella Mathilda Nord Wood, 83, of Albany and Coronado, Calif., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004 in Coronado.
Mrs. Wood was born March 25, 1921 in Wolverton, Minn., to Charles and Julia (Eklo) Nord, Swedish and Norwegian immigrants who were pioneer farmers in the Red River Valley. Raised on the family farm, she was active in 4-H and graduated from Wolverton High School in 1938.
Mrs. Wood raised chickens to put herself through nursing school at Trinity Hospital in Minot, N.D., and received her degree as a registered nurse in 1943. She served as a U.S. Army nurse during World War II, stationed at Schick General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, until her discharge as a second lieutenant in 1946.
Mrs. Wood moved to the West Coast, where she met her husband, Jack H. Wood, in the Puyallup, Wash., hospital's emergency room where she was working. They married Dec. 27, 1947 in Wolverton. He died in February 1990.
The Woods moved to Astoria in 1951, where Mrs. Wood was director of nursing at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and was a 10-year 4-H club leader.
In 1970, the family moved to Columbia, Mo., where Mrs. Wood earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Missouri. She graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1975 with a master's degree in nursing. In 1972, she began teaching in the nursing program at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany and became chairwoman of the nursing department in 1978.
She retired in 1980 and continued to work as a nursing consultant and volunteer. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Albany, serving as the parish nurse and as a Stephen minister. She was also an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a 50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. The Woods traveled extensively with Rural Route Tours and the Friendship Force, a goodwill ambassador program.
Mrs. Wood is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gregory B. Wood of Seattle and John E. and Karen Wood of Coronado; a daughter and son-in-law, Julianne C. Wood-Rethwill and Craig Rethwill of Portage, Mich.; a sister Judith C. Nord of Fargo, N.D.; four grandchildren, Conner and Brooks Rethwill, and Kristiana and Jack Wood; and many nieces and nephews.
A service will be Friday at Humphrey Mortuary in Coronado.
A visitation and service will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in Albany with The Rev. Dr. Lori Lofsvold officiating.
The funeral will conclude at Willamette Memorial Park with the U.S. Army and American Legion posts 10 and 51 rendering military honors.
