Carol died peacefully in Portland after a long illness. She was the fourth of six children born to Louis and Mary Ihander. She graduated from Astoria High School in 1943. She was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps at Providence School of Nursing in Seattle, and graduated as an RN in 1946. Carol and Melvin Graeber were married May 17, 1947, in Astoria. Ronald was born in 1948 and died in 1986. Barbara was born in 1960. Wayne Lindquist, foster son, joined the family in 1962.
Carol had a fifty year career in nursing. She and Mel retired to Garibaldi in 1986, where she continued to be active in nursing as well as with the Rockaway Lions and Lionesses. Favorite pastimes were swimming and gardening. Carol enjoyed life to its fullest and was always the life of the party. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband Mel, daughter Barbara Hathaway, foster son Wayne Lindquist (Mary), two grandsons, three granddaughters, and five great grandchildren. She is survived also by her sister Laura Reith of Astoria, and Lillian Gustafson Sundholm (aunt) of Portland, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Louise Paetow and Florence Colby, and brothers Albin and Fred Ihander.
A memorial service has been held. Remembrances may be sent to the Rockaway Lions Club.
