Denis D. Soderman, 78, of Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Born June 13, 1935, to the late Bert and Vivian Soderman of Astoria, OR, Denis is survived by his wife, JoAnne Nowak Soderman of Tucson; four children, Alan Soderman of Paris, France, Elsa Soderman Young (Matthew) of Tucson, Denis Soderman (Amanda) of Sahuarita, AZ and Erika Soderman (Katie) of Soldotna, AK; a sister, Gail Nickerson (Bob) of Redmond, WA; a brother, Paul Soderman (Amy) of Boonville, CA; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Denis was a native of Astoria, Oregon, and graduated from Astoria High, where he was a letterman and played football, basketball and track and field.

He earned a degree in the sciences from Thomas Edison in New Jersey, and served in the U.S. Army before working as a research scientist in the biological warfare labs at Ft. Detrick, MD. In the early 90s, he retired from Merck & Co. of Rahway, NJ, as a research biochemist.

Denis was an avid outdoorsman, and volunteered for the Monmouth County, NJ, park system and was also a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Astoria, and most recently joined St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Tucson.

A private celebration of his life will be held in June.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army or to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Tucson.
