Lilja (Lillian) Esther Yrjana Riese passed peacefully away on January 18, 2014, in York, Pennsylvania, at the age of 97. She was born in Astoria on December 27, 1916, the elder daughter of the late John Paul Yrjana and the late Anna W. (Klemetti) Yrjana Kivisto, both originally from Hailuoto, Finland.
Lillian grew up in a house that still stands at 382 Alameda Avenue, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1935. After working as a secretary in Astoria following high school, she met her future husband, Carl F. Riese, while visiting her sister in1941 at Fort Monroe, Virginia, where Carl was serving in the U.S. Army. Lillian was married in North Carolina in 1942, and later moved with her husband to Fort Bliss, Texas, before leaving the military and settling in York, Pennsylvania.
