Dec. 3, 1947 — May 5, 2015
Patricia A Clausen, 67, of Milton-Freewater, Ore., died of carcinoid cancer on May 5, 2015, in Houston, Texas. At her request, there will be no service. She donated her body for research.
Born Dec. 3, 1947, in Walla Walla, Wash., to George and Dorothy Clausen, Patricia spent her childhood on the Hudson Bay Dairy in Umapine, Ore. She attended Umapine grade school. It was there that she learned her favorite pastime: reading. She began keeping a journal of the books that she read, and continued recording the rest of her life. When asked about her knowledge of a variety of topics, she attributed it to the Weekly Reader magazine read in grade school.
In 1960 the family moved to Milton-Freewater, where Patricia graduated from Mac-Hi in 1966. She continued her education at Eastern Oregon College, and graduated in 1970. After graduation she landed her dream job teaching English and journalism at Seaside High School. She later took a break from teaching and moved back to the Walla Walla Valley, where she worked at Walla Walla Bi-Mart, and then the Bank of Commerce in Milton-Freewater. She returned to education and taught English in Heppner, Warrenton, Hermiston, and Stanfield. She kept in close contact with many of her students and students-in-law over the years. Leon Russell was her favorite musical artist, as all who knew her soon came to realize.
Knowing that life is short, Patricia was fortunate enough to travel both before and after retirement. She loved Southern California, especially Catalina Island and Santa Barbara. Reno and Lake Tahoe were favorite vacation spots. She was able to make several trips to England and Scotland via the QE2, the Concorde, and the Queen Mary, enjoying New York City on both ends of the trips. She made many trips to the North Oregon Coast, enjoying visits with many friends there. Traveling in her fifth-wheel was always an adventure. Of course, a trip to Wildhorse Casino, or any nearby casino, was never counted out. She made friends wherever she went.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Mary Kay Clausen.
