Robert E. Fastabend

Robert Fastabend

Vancouver, Washington

Dec. 25, 1933 — Dec. 24, 2017

Col. Robert Edward Fastabend (ret.), 83, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017. He was born a Christmas twin on Dec. 25, 1933, in Astoria, Oregon, to John and Elizabeth (Shea) Fastabend. His twin, Bill, passed in December 2002. He grew up in a large family with six brothers and a sister. It was a lively household with much laughter and love. The brothers were the best of practical jokers, as evident one Christmas when Bob got a left shoe for Christmas and a right shoe for his birthday.

Robert “Bob” graduated from Star of the Sea High School in 1951. He married his sweetheart, Margaret “Peggy” Smith, in October 1952, in Astoria, Oregon. Bob and Peggy had five children, which they raised in the old Naval Hospital grounds in the Walluski area outside of Astoria.

Robert worked as a foreman for Lovell Auto Co. in Astoria from 1951 to 1968. In 1968, Robert began a full-time career for the Oregon Army National Guard, which started as a shop foreman at Camp Rilea. He transferred to Camp Withycombe in May 1971 and resided in Milwaukie, Oregon. In 1984, he transferred to the Oregon Military Department in Salem, Oregon. Robert retired in 1988 as a chief of staff for the Oregon Army National Guard. Robert’s kind demeanor and leadership style produced a high degree of loyalty from his officers and troops. He gained great respect from all who called him colonel.

He was a very supportive and fun-loving father and grandfather. He was generous to his grandkids, and enjoyed spending time with them all. You would often find him sitting on the floor playing right alongside his grandkids and great grandkids, who lovingly called him GG Bob.

Robert is survived by his wife, Peggy Fastabend; daughters Karen Black (Pat), Jackie Dieker (John) and Paula Starr (Kandie); sons Ken Fastabend (Cathy) and Randall Fastabend (Corinn Brown); sister Cathy VanHorn of Astoria, Oregon; brother Jack Fastabend of Richland, Washington; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Robert was a proud member of the Tualatin Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

Services and military honors will be held at a later time.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made as donations at, or at Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka KS 66675-8517.
