Hurray for the Astoria High School (AHS) marching band. On Oct. 8, my wife and I attended the 23rd annual Sunset Marching Band competition at the Hillsboro stadium.         This event challenges area high school marching bands to come up with entertaining movement while performing wonderful music.

We were actually attending to see and hear our grandson, a member of the Glencoe High School marching band, 62 students strong.

To our surprise, AHS was one of the participants, competeing with Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, even Boise, Idaho. Boise’s Century High had 125 kids participating. Evergreen High of Vancouver, Wash., had 150.

But Astoria, with only 27 participants, put on an amazing show titled “Outside the Box.” The crowd loved it, and we stood and cheered at the finale. Good job, AHS marching band!
