Now that the Senate has rejected an ill-advised proposal to drill for oil in an Alaskan wildlife refuge, the Bush administration should let this bad idea go. .... Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., pointed out that the United States could save more oil than the refuge could produce, just by demanding automakers to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicles they're making now. ... Under a loophole Congress has failed to close, automakers are allowed to classify SUVs as trucks, allowing them to avoid the higher gasoline-mileage standards imposed on cars. Higher mileage requirements are needed. The technology is there - in fact, both Ford and Lexus will soon introduce new hybrid SUVs, which use a minimum of gasoline, deriving most of their power from electricity.
