Change is always a challenge. Change that is imposed from above can be resented. That’s been the response at some Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon high schools that must remove Indians as their athletic team mascots. The Oregon Board of Education voted 5-1 last Thursday to make that change.

It is heartening that Warrenton High School officials are speaking pragmatically about this turn of events.

One of this newspaper’s user comments, posted online from Greg Walker, said: “If I were at the WHS I'd move swiftly. Down with the statue, change the logos and mascot and move on. Beat the five year deadline by four and a half years.”

It is healthy in situations like this to look forward and not backward.

The Board of Education’s decision makes sense. It’s time.
