I have voted no on the recent Clatsop County jail bond because I felt that there are already too many people in jail, we have other more pressing needs (like improved school buildings in Seaside), and finally, the impact it would have on housing costs and my own property tax bill.

Today I am ready to actively promote another bond election and I am ready to financially support the effort when someone is charged with assault and strangulation, and released after only four days due to jail overcrowding, gets back on methamphetamine and goes after his estranged wife and family.

And this is not the first time this has happened. We have a terrible meth problem in this county, I can’t tell you how many people I know who are struggling with this addiction. That fuels the violence for many of these troubled young men. They need to be off the streets for our protection and theirs.

Expanding the jail will not solve the problem completely but it will help. Let’s get this back on the ballot and help get it passed. What other choice do we have?
