Two weeks ago, I was shopping in downtown Astoria with my young son. While I was shopping, my clever golden retriever somehow managed to escape through a window he opened.

I had no idea that he was running loose in the middle of afternoon traffic. Those of you who avoided hitting a long-haired blonde dog, I thank you.

When I came out of the store, imagine my horror to find my husband's loyal friend gone. My little boy and I searched, called and whistled to find our dog.

He owes his life today to the heroic efforts of a young woman named Jillian (or Gillian) who came to his rescue and took him to her residence. She then used the phone numbers on his tags to find me.

Thankfully, this young woman did not live far away and was able to return our dog. She even missed a class she was supposed to teach in order to find us.

I wanted to let her know again how grateful my family is to her for saving our family pet from the perils of Astoria traffic.
