I applaud the Warrenton Cafe event of Jan. 27, where the focus of discussion was underage drinking. It is scary to hear that one-third of our eighth-graders are drinking and half of our 11th graders are binge drinkers. These kids are our future alcoholics and fatal drunk drivers.

I agree that we need to do something, and I am sure that the school programs are effective, but what is a kid to do on a weekend or spring break? I think boredom is an ingredient to this problem of underage drinking.

There is nothing for kids to do but hang out in parks and beaches drinking and having unprotected sex. This community needs to allow facilities like the YMCA, skating rinks and rock climbing facilities into the area. If we want to be a thriving and forward-thinking community, we have to invest in our youth.
