Brian Gander has been quoted in our Jewell School newsletter, co-authored by our school board chairwoman, that “the past culture is responsible for the recent turmoil at Jewell School.” I assume they are referring to the years when John Seeley was our superintendent. Since he left, two-thirds of our classified and certified staff have left or have been replaced.

I think that argument is a complete cop-out and our superintendent, and the school board he has so favorably impressed, need to look deeper for the root of the problem. After months of impasse between our two unions and the administrator, our board finally hired Jim Carlyle as an arbitrator to collect information and offer an objective opinion as to Brian Gander’s job performance.

At next week’s school board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, he is going to share the details of his findings with the school board in executive session, and then return to the public forum and let us know his determination. I would strongly urge our community to be in attendance.

To read the testimonials documenting his misconduct, and to sign the petition we are circulating calling for the termination of his contract, find us on Facebook at Concerned Parents of Jewell School, or write to us at P.O. Box 400, Seaside, OR 97138.
