Let’s see now, the Astoria City Council, possibly their spouses/partners, maybe the city manager and his wife, and Lord knows who else, all get to go on a little junket to our sister city, Walldorf, Germany.

Now, what would that be, about $2,000 a head for this delegation in travel costs, minimum? And for what purpose, may I ask, and what end result to the benefit of the citizens of Astoria and Clatsop County?

Who’s going to pay for this, I ask? Certainly not Astoria taxpayers, and I ask again to what purpose – just a little goodwill visit to bolster our relationship?

Seems to me if this delegation were headed to some destination to present the assets of Astoria, the region and its workforce to a potential prospect, or prospects, to bring compatible and cohesive industry to the Lower Columbia at, say, Tongue Point, at the least, to put many hundreds of us to work in sustainable family wage jobs, it would be received more enthusiastically than this use of public monies we really don’t have to spend.
