Years and years ago, when taking a plane back to college, I was lucky enough to sit by a man who had ridden with Black Jack Pershing in pursuit of Pancho Villa. During the conversation he made a comment that has stuck with me for 65 years. “There is no promotion in peacetime.”

It made me think then of the Japanese generals, who got Japan involved in their disastrous war.

And it makes me think now of our generals, who are so eager to spend American lives in equally disastrous wars.

There is no promotion in peacetime.
