With four candidates running against the sheriff this election year, I feel the need to support my sheriff, Tom Bergin. These last eight years Bergin has proved up to the task of leading, making tough decisions and running our Sheriffs Office. Bergin had the support of his fellow Oregon sheriffs when he was elected Sheriff of the Year.
I know and like all the other candidates running for sheriff. Clatsop County has been lucky to have dedicated law enforcement officers such as these candidates, but Bergin is a standout far ahead of this pack.
I have known Bergin for 25 years, and have worked with him at the Sheriffs Office for 20 years. As a patrol deputy, sergeant and detective sergeant, Bergin was amazing in his ability to clear cases and make arrests. Bergin was the best I have seen.
When Bergin supervised the Clatsop County Inter Agency Drug Team, the team was recognized and received an award for Narcotics Agency of the year for the Western States in 2001.
While Bergin was a great street cop, what I found most admirable about him was the compassion he showed to the people he arrested and the victims of the crimes he investigated. You just knew he was trying to help these people and our community.
Bergin was born to be a leader in law enforcement and has earned the position of sheriff. There is no question Bergin has the integrity and work ethic to continue as sheriff leading the Clatsop County Sheriffs Office.
