I was pleased to read the article about the Lovin' Soupfull fund-raiser ("Supper bowl event will win some bread," The Daily Astorian, Tuesday). I hope the community goes all out in their support for such a worthy cause.

I'm amazed at how far the Women's Resource Center in Astoria has come in the last 25 years it has served the community. When I lived in Astoria in the 1970s, there was no place for battered women to go, let alone a hotline to call. I was in an abusive relationship then and had no way out, so I tried to kill myself. I obviously didn't succeed in my efforts, but it goes to show the level of desperation someone could be in when they have no options. I know the need that the center meets is a powerful one.
