We are sure that by now you all know that the Seaside School District is in the process of designing a new K-12 campus that will be outside of the tsunami inundation zone. The school will be a safe refuge for our students and our communities of Seaside, Gearhart and Cannon Beach. It will embrace 21st century teaching and learning philosophies, and it will be designed with 21st century sustainability and efficiencies.
The school buildings that are now in place are very old and tired, and are located in the tsunami zone. The new K-12 campus will be designed to increase the safety and security of all students.
A statewide assessment of school buildings showed the majority of Seaside School District buildings are at a high probability of collapsing in the event of an earthquake. Passage of the bond measure to construct a new K-12 campus in a safe location outside of the tsunami zone is essential.
Constructing a new energy efficient campus will save the district tens and thousands of dollars in operating costs. The existing district properties will be sold, and the proceeds will be placed into a dedicated fund that will be used for future campus repairs and maintenance. The district plans, to the greatest extent possible, to hire local businesses and contractors to do the construction work associated with the bond.
The new campus facility will enhance student learning by allowing flexible spaces for innovative teaching practices and providing students access to modern technology.
With the three communities involved (Seaside, Gearhart, Cannon Beach) there are 10,000 to 12,000 people. We would like to think that this kind of interest and concern would put this over the top. It is the best time to relocate our schools.
Remember the Big Three: increase safety, economic advantage and enhance learning.
We encourage you to vote yes supporting the Seaside School District.
