Kathy Sanders has distinguished herself as an exceptional candidate for the Port of Astoria Commission. We are fortunate that she is willing to serve.

The Port has lost credibility in recent years. It also faces very difficult financial constraints, partly due to a series of poor decisions. I'm not sure why the incumbent commissioners even decided to run.

Two of the three races should be won by honest and clear-thinking challengers: Patrick McGee and Bill Hunsinger. These gentlemen offer unique and trustworthy voices that will help to transform the commission for the better.

But in a crowded race for seat for Position 4, Kathy Sanders needs and deserves our support. She has the prerequisite respect for public process and openness in government. She also understands and respects the responsibility of serving as a Port commissioner. She takes nothing at face value, and is not shy about making the contacts needed to uncover the facts. I fully trust her to oversee and help create the policies of the Port.

Probably the most important task of the Port of Astoria Commission during the coming year, as Sanders has pointed out, will be to hire a new executive director. In my opinion, Sanders will represent this county very well in making this decision.

Sanders has been open and accessible in sharing her experience and platform. You can learn more about her at www.kathysanders.blogspot.com

And, please, remember to vote.
