We recently ended another very successful year of the SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) reading program at Cannon Beach Elementary School. Again this school year, the Cannon Beach SMART program was an after-school program.
The financing for the bus transportation for the students after attending the SMART program each week was made possible by donations from the Van Dusen family and Martin Hospitality through the Pepsi Refresh program.
I would like to thank all of our full-time volunteers: Melissa Cadwallader, Hugh Hendrickson, Mae Hendrickson, Don Lindstedt, Sharon Perigen, Buffy Simmons and Stephanie Snyder. In addition, thanks to a volunteer that helped us for a partial part of the school year: Rainey Graham. I would like to extend a great big thank you to Stephen Snyder, who was our junior SMART reader this year.
My gratitude to the staff and students at Cannon Beach Elementary School who always made the SMART volunteer readers feel welcome in their building and for always being willing to assist us and share their space with us. The entire staff at CBE is wonderfully dedicated to building great future readers.
Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to the SMART readers who always were enthusiastic readers and gave us an opportunity to share our love of reading and books with them. I encourage them to continue to read, read, read.
I would like to urge everyone in our communities to think about volunteering for the SMART program next year at an area school. The SMART program requires about an hour a week of your time from OctoberMay, and I guarantee you will have many priceless experiences with young readers.
