It's extremely difficult to understand how a person can be unaccounted for in the Astoria Aquatic Center's pool for such a long period of time with her family present and five pool staff on duty, two of them with the job description of "lifeguard" ("There's been some complacency down there," The Daily Astorian, June 15). Were they really on duty?
At any rate, what happened cannot be undone, but the least that should now happen is to review and tighten up the safety and operation procedures, and possibly add more lifeguards.
If that does not work, and the pool cannot be operated safely, it should not be open to a trusting public.
"Sort of safe" is not good enough.
