The right wing is constantly attacking Obamacare. “Thousands of people are suffering today because of Obamacare” – they repeat that over and over again.

I have a short good story about Obamacare: My son is among the long-term unemployed. He is in his late 40s. He has only been able to find occasional temporary employment. I urged him to sign up for Obamacare. He was depressed and just wouldn’t do it.

I got after him,and when we tried the website, it didn’t work, but there was a number to call. I urged him to call the number and he said, “No, mom, that is just an ad, they just want you to buy insurance and I don’t have any money.”

So I really pushed him, and finally he contacted someone and was able to download a 19-page application. I got after him to fill it out and send it in. I really didn’t think he would be able to get anything, but maybe there was a chance.

Well, he was accepted into Oregon Health Care and was able to get antidepressants. He said he felt much better. He got a small settlement from wages earned, but not paid, from a small employer and was able to renew his driver’s license, and pay off a few bills.

Recently he found another long-term temporary job, found a place to live that he could afford, and things were looking up. Last night he called to tell me he had been diagnosed with cancer and how thankful he was that he had health care. I am thankful, too.
