Magicians and monsters and movie making, oh my! This is not a typical summer at the Seaside Library. Beginning June 16 and running through August 18, the Seaside Public Library will begin the 2012 Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme for our younger readers is “Dream Big, Read” and our young adult program is called “Own the Night”.

For our younger readers, we have planned a whole summer of fun. Are you ready for a quick “Dream Big” list of special events? Well here goes.

-June 26: Create a monster to display in the children’s room at “Monster Story Time”.

-June 29: Ventriloquist and magician Steve Taylor is back for an encore performance.

-July 7: Join Penny Walters Puppets as Batunia the bat goes on a musical tour of night time creatures.

-July 17: Family sing-a-long with “Beach Jam."

-July 21: The “Reptile Man” is back with a whole mess o’ snakes.

-July 31: Kids create a spyglass, moon ornaments, and other goodies at the “Walk in Craft” event.

For our young adult readers we are offering classes to unleash their creativity. Every Thursday at 4 p.m. we are offering programs and events. Our participants will start out creating dream journals, and move on to duct tape crafts, writing screenplays and making their own movies. These are just a few of the special offerings in store for teens. If you think this is a lot, we have barely scratched the surface of what’s in store for kids this summer at the Seaside Public Library.

We are trying to make it better and to reach more students. We believe this project is important because students that read during the summer have a better chance of succeeding in school than those that do not continue to read.

To engage the community in our summer reading program we are encouraging people to donate new books that we could give to the children who can not afford to buy their own books. To donate new books or to make a cash contribution, contact the library at (503) 738-6742.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins June 16

For those who complete a reading record, they get a free book, and for those who complete half of a reading record, they will earn a mini pizza. How can you not sign up?

Come on down and “Dream Big” and “Own the Night” at 1131 Broadway, across from the Swimming Pool, and sign up for a summer of fun. Give us a call at (503)738-6742 or check us out at www.seasidelibrary.org and www.facebook.com/seasidepubliclibrary.

Reita Frackerell is the director of the Seaside Public Library. She can be reached at (503) 738-6742.
