Steve Hudgik is a member of the deacon board at Cannon Beach Bible Church. We talked to Steve as he prepares for Sunday worship.

Where did you move to Oregon from?

I am originally from Massachusetts and moved to Oregon in 1981. My wife was originally from Connecticut. We got married there and moved to Oregon two days later. I was in industrial sales, and my company gave me a choice between Oregon and Texas. I picked Texas, but they sent me to Oregon. I found I loved it here, and now I’m never leaving.

Do you have any family?

I’ve been married for 32 years and we have two children. My daughter used to work at Ecola State Park and now works for the Oregon Department of Forestry. My son is a civil engineer in North Dakota.

What do you enjoy doing with your spare time?

I love science and talking about technical things. I really have a passion for dinosaurs and love reading or learning anything I can about them. If you get me talking about that subject I have a hard time stopping. The best part is sharing good conversation with someone.

What brought you to Cannon Beach?

We started coming to Cannon Beach all the time after we moved to Oregon. We fell in love with it instantly. We bought what I was told was the town hermit’s old house. It took a while but we fixed it up. My wife has been attending Cannon Beach Bible Church since 1991. I started attending after I became a Christian in 1999, and it changed my life.

What do you do at CB Bible Church?

The church is very informal. There is no regular pastor. There are four of us deacons, and between us we take turns preaching each Sunday.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

All of my inspiration comes from the Bible. I really admire Paul and what he went through. I admire how he managed to stay faithful despite many hardships.

What is your biggest daily challenge?

I’m kind of a Type-A personality, or a workaholic. I’m sort of semi-retired, but I keep finding ways to work and things to keep me busy. I’d love to spend more time with my wife, sit on my porch and read. We have some great neighbors who I’d like to visit with more. I need to make more time for those things.

What is the most rewarding thing about your church work?

Besides my time at Cannon Beach Bible Church, I also run a ministry in Portland. In both cases, I love getting out and meeting people. I love getting out onto the streets and finding out what people are thinking about, whether it’s spirituality or science or whatever. I love asking questions and starting conversations.

What do you enjoy most about CB Bible Church?

The people. There are some great people who attend and who we have known for a long time. The people who live in Cannon Beach have a good heart for God.

How do you define a life well lived?

For me, living in obedience to God. That’s not the ‘no drinking, no dancing’ kind of obedience. It’s the kind where we understand that God loves us and that we need to love one another every day.
