Banks 61, Astoria 44BANKS - The first half for Banks was better than Astoria's second half Thursday night as the Braves held on for a 61-44 win over the Fishermen in a Cowapa League girls basketball game at Banks.
Astoria outscored the Braves 30-22 over the final two quarters, but the Fishermen couldn't overcome a 39-14 halftime deficit.
"We had a little trouble breaking their press, but once we did, we were fine," said Astoria coach Ralph Steinback. "We played a lot better in the second half. We played hard and we were a lot more aggressive. We just dug ourselves a hole in the first half."
Astoria was 13-of-25 at the free throw line, while Banks went 17-of-36.
Banks' Kelley Lindstrom led four Braves in double figures with 13, followed by Stephanie Crop and Sandy Lewis (12 points apiece) and Cortney Bartha (11).
Kristann Quigley scored 10 points for the Fishermen, who were missing starting point guard Jade Kelly. Tara Johnson and Shelby Cullen scored eight points apiece.
In other Cowapa action Thursday, Tillamook defeated Rainier 62-37.
Astoria hosts Scappoose Monday.
Scappoose 67, Seaside 40SCAPPOOSE - Scappoose snapped a two-game Seaside win streak Thursday night defeating the visiting Gulls 67-40.
The Gulls (2-2) played evenly with the Indians in the first and fourth quarters, but it was the second and third periods that hurt. Scappoose outscored Seaside 40-19.
Jenna Ball pumped in a game-high 17 points for the Indians (3-1 in league), with teammate Lynette Karp adding 14. Kailee Engstrom scored nine for Scappoose.
Seaside junior Jeannie Pfund had one of her best efforts of the season, scoring 11 points to lead the Gulls, with eight points from Amanda Laird and seven from Brenna Archibald.
The Gulls host Rainier Monday.
La Center 54, Ilwaco 29ILWACO, Wash. - La Center had three players in double figures and won a big game on the road Thursday night knocking off Ilwaco 54-29 in a Trico League game at Aase Gymnasium.
La Center's Brittney Roggenkamp scored 19 points to lead all players, followed by teammates Tanya Baker (13) and Sarah Davis (11).
Ashley Kitzman led Ilwaco with 18 points, but the scoring dropped off after that, with Robyn Unruh and Katie Holmes scoring three points apiece.
The Lady Fishermen play in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Stevenson.
Ilwaco 55, La Center 35ILWACO, Wash. - A scoring explosion by Ilwaco in the fourth quarter led to a 55-35 win for the Ilwaco boys basketball team, which defeated the La Center Wildcats Thursday night at Ilwaco.
The Fishermen led 29-27 going into the fourth quarter, then nearly doubled their point total by outscoring La Center 26-8 in the final period.
Shane Padgett led Ilwaco with 15 points, and teammate Salvatore Inserra chipped in 10 points. Ryan Cadwell scored nine, with eight points apiece from Rocky Mirelez and Jordan Williams.
Ilwaco plays at Stevenson (5:45 p.m.) Saturday.
