Two Astoria natives participated in a half marathon in Ethiopia recently. The EveryOne Campaign Race to raise awareness about childhood malnutrition was held in Hawassa, Ethiopia May 6. Mike Allen and Steve Allen placed 26th and 29th respectively out of about 200 participants in the mass 21K race. It was their first time competing in an African competition and completing a half marathon. After the race, they were both able to meet Ethiopia’s most famous runner, Haile Gebrselassie (http://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Haile_ Gebrselassie).

Mike and Steve participated in the race at the end of a visit to Ethiopia to see their brother Daniel Allen and his wife Nikole Allen, third-year Peace Corps volunteers in Ethiopia. Daniel and Nikole participated in the 7K race along with fellow Astorian and Ethiopian Peace Corps volunteer Chuck Adams.
