Until Cole Banta (189 lb) and Chance Banta (215 lb) had their matches in the dual meet between Seaside and Astoria Friday night, it looked like the Gulls had a good opportunity to defeat their northern rivals. However, the Banta double act pinned two excellent Seaside wrestlers and put Astoria over the top.

Despite being on their home turf, the Gulls ended up losing to the Fishermen 47-30.

Gull wrestler Peter Scruggs struggled to overcome the overwhelming power of Cole Banta, and ended up being pinned 3:34 into the match. Heavyweight wrestler Alex Swynenburg fared a little better against Chance Banta, but not much, as he was pinned 4:41 into the match.

Although there were twice as many forfeits as actual matches, of the seven matches wrestled, the Gulls won only one. In the 125 lb division, Justin Near of Seaside pinned Jonathan Randall at the 1:09 mark.

Friday and Saturday, Astoria hosts the Cowapa League wrestling championships.
