PORTLAND - Astoria and Seaside wrestlers had mixed results on Day 1 of the OSAA state wrestling tournament, which began Thursday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
As expected, Astoria's Banta brothers both opened with victories, and will both take part in semifinal action Friday.
Senior Cole Banta opened with a pin (1:28) over Tyler Spencer of Pleasant Hill, then defeated Zack Stulzman of Stayton 7-0 to reach the quarterfinals at 189 pounds, where he will face Anthony Albright of Sweet Home Friday.
At 215 pounds, Chance Banta scored a 7-3 decision over North Marion's Soren Christensen, and is scheduled to face Marc Callagan of Sweet Home in Friday's quarterfinals.
Seaside's Alex Swynenberg - also competing at 215 - won his first round match against Khrys Bahr of Taft (12-5), but then was pinned by Lance Tausaga of Illinois Valley.
At 103 pounds, Astoria's Kyle Lucore lost matches to Jesse Orndoff of Illinois Valley and Mike Rogers of McLaughlin.
Competing at 125 pounds, Astoria sophomore Cody Falk dropped an opening round match to Vince Morales of Ontario, then lost to Brian Heater of Henley in the consolation bracket.
Also at 125, Seaside's Justin Near lost his opening match to Nico Martinez of Ontario.
