ESTACADA - It was a building season but a successful season for the Astoria volleyball team, whose 2002 campaign came to a close Saturday night in Estacada, in a first-round state playoff match.

The fifth-ranked Rangers edged past the Fishermen in Game 1, 25-19, then cruised to 25-5 and 25-10 wins in Games 2 and 3.

"We competed real well, but we really struggled with the serve receive," said Astoria coach Jeff Leo. "And Estacada is a very good team - I expect them to do real well at the state tournament."

Leo said the first game was "the best game we've played all year," but the Rangers grabbed the momentum in Game 2.

"We got everything we could expect out this season," Leo said. "Making the state playoffs was our goal from the beginning of the season."

Heidi Hanson led Astoria with four kills.

The Fishermen, who finish the season at 9-10 overall, lose four seniors - Taryn Arnold, Erin McCoy, Juliann Nelson and Kari Patching.
