SCAPPOOSE — It was defense to the rescue Friday afternoon at Scappoose, as the Astoria infield saved the day in a 2-0 Fishermen Cowapa League baseball win over the Indians.

Astoria third baseman Cody Fox fielded seven grounders and made all seven plays for outs, while Nick Strange was 4-for-4 at shortstop.

Strange made a diving stop on a ball hit up the middle in the bottom of the seventh, got up and made the throw to first for an out. The next batter had a double, but Astoria pitcher Andrew Bergeson was able to close out the contest for the win.

Bergeson allowed four hits, with two strikeouts, while Astoria scored a run in the second and one in the sixth, both RBI singles from Taylor Holthusen.

The same two teams meet today at Aiken Field (5 p.m.).

In other Cowapa League action Friday, Yamhill-Carlton defeated Seaside 9-8, and Banks topped Tillamook, 10-2.
