Seaside 13, Tillamook 3

SEASIDE — The Seaside baseball team broke open a close game with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth Thursday on its way to a 13-3, five-inning win over Tillamook at Broadway Field.

The Gulls led just 4-3 heading into their fourth at-bat when they jumped all over the Cheesemakers for their third straight victory.

Seaside’s Eddie Soller tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts, and also had a double and scored two runs in the victory.

Ben DeGandi continued his big week, going 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored; Charles Hawes was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs with two runs scored.

Seaside collected nine hits off three Tillamook pitchers.

Earlier in the week, the Gulls scored a 3-2 win over the Cheesemakers in 10 innings.

Tillamook starter Matt Strang and Seaside’s Nick Nelson both pitched the entire game, and gave up a combined three hits.

Nelson struck out 10 with no walks and two hits allowed, while Strang had 10 strikeouts, walked three and gave up just one hit in the loss.

All three players walked by Strang eventually scored.

“We were very fortunate,” said Seaside coach Joel Dierickx, after Tuesday’s win. “It was a great pitcher’s deuel. Strang pitched a great game, and Nick was up to the task for us. Charles Hawes made two spectacular plays in the outfield that were huge.”

In fact, a diving catch by Hawes in right field ended the game, with the tying run in scoring position.

Seaside’s only hit was a fifth-inning single by Jason Pfund.

Strang threw 140 pitches in the tough-luck defeat, while Nelson finished the game at 102.
