TILLAMOOK — The most improbable result of the day Tuesday took place in Tillamook, where the Cheesemakers scored a 2-1 win over Astoria for their first win over the Fishermen since 1998.

The Mooks scored a pair of unearned runs, and took advantage of a few untimely errors by the Fishermen to make off with the victory.

“We struggled, but their kid (starting pitcher Matt Strang) threw a great game,” said Astoria coach Dave Gasser. “You have to give the kid his due. When the going got tough, he made the pitches and got the outs. They got three tough outs in the seventh … it was just their day.”

Andrew Bergeson pitched a solid game for Astoria, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. He also drove in Astoria’s lone run of the day.

Strang “is a 6-2 righty who throws hard,” Gasser said. “His breaking ball was breaking, and he wasn’t walking anybody.”

Astoria hosts Tillamook for a single game Thursday.
