LONGVIEW, Wash. - The best in prep hoops from the Lower Columbia region met Tuesday night in Longview, for the annual Lower Columbia Area High School All-Star basketball games.
And it was the stars from the (lower) Lower Columbia who filled up the nets at Myklebust Gym on the campus of Lower Columbia College.
Naselle's Manny Lopez was the Most Valuable Player of the boys' game, as the Comet senior poured in 11 points and dominated the boards for 16 rebounds as his Red team defeated the White team, 96-85.
It wasn't easy, because Naselle teammate Austin Burkhalter scorched the nets for 26 points, with nine rebounds for the White squad.
Coach Brian Macy of Naselle said, "Both Manny and Austin played really well against the competition. I couldn't be more proud of these two guys. They capped off tremendous careers with brilliant games."
In the girls' contest, Ashley Tapio of Ilwaco recorded a typical double-double as she scored 12 points with 11 rebounds for the Red team, although the White team scored a 92-82 victory.
Aimee Banuet rolled in five points and dished out a team-high six assists for the winners.
Toledo's Tiffany Tornow scored 30 points to go with 10 assists for the White team, which trailed 76-75 when Astoria's Jordan Thoreson hit a jump shot to give the Reds the lead with 7:20 left.
The White team answered with a 7-0 run, on its way to the win.
Thoreson had 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Seaside's Anna Toyas added 10 points and five rebounds.
