Laura Bobek's newest sport? Powerlifting.

The Astoria High School junior-to-be recently took part in her first powerlifting competition, and - despite being the only competitor in her division - scored some big marks.

Bobek and her lifting coach, Max Bigby, made the trip north to Seattle so Bobek could compete in the USA Powerlifting YMCA Seattle Summer Classic, which took place July 7.

Bobek's marks in the following events were:

Squat: 170 kilograms (374.8 pounds)

Deadlift: 165 kilograms (363.8 pounds)

Bench: 87.5 kilograms (192.9 pounds)

Total: 422.5 kilograms (931.5 pounds)

Bigby said Bobek has a possible future in powerlifting, in addition to her exploits in the shot put and discus, both of which she won state titles in last spring.

"I've never worked with an athlete like her," Bigby said. "Judging from what I saw, she did a great job in her first competition. She's the real thing. And she's always very positive."
