The 2001 Seaside High School boys track and field team captured Oregon's 3A state championship in thrilling fashion, edging out Philomath to win on the final event.

Coach Charles Schneekloth guided the Seagulls to a 5-1 regular season record, their only loss coming in a dual meet to Scappoose, 73-72.

At the Cowapa District championships, Schneekloth elected to rest his athletes, using the district meet as a "dress rehearsal" for the following weekend's state tournament.

The approach paid off, as Seaside outpaced Philomath 48.5 to 46 to win the state title.

The athletes who contributed to the winning 48.5 points were Adrian Anderson, winner of the 3000 meters and sixth-place finisher in the 1500 meters; Rich Walsborn, second place in the triple jump; Shawn McCord, winner of the javelin; Jesse Austin, fifth place in the high jump; Dave McAlinden, second place in the pole vault; and Walsborn, Josh Austin, Zoe Fenton and Garrett Parks, who took third in the 4x400 meter relay.

The 4x400 meter relay race was the championship's deciding event: Entering the race, Seaside was neck and neck with Philomath and Wilsonville. To win the team championship, Seaside needed to beat Wilsonville in the relay and not lose to Philomath by more than three places.

Walsborn anchored the final leg of the race, crossing the line for a third-place finish for Seaside – ahead of Wilsonville – giving the school the overall team state championship.
