TILLAMOOK - The Seaside volleyball team ended its season a little sooner than expected Wednesday night.
Faced with the daunting task of having to win two matches in one night to advance to the state playoffs, the Gulls failed to get past Banks in the opener of the Cowapa League playoffs at Tillamook.
The Braves - seeded fourth coming into the league playoff - defeated the fifth-seeded Gulls (24-26, 25-16, 15-11), then knocked off No. 3 seed Tillamook (27-25, 25-21) in the final match to gain a spot in the state playoffs.
Brenna Archibald led the Gulls with six kills and three aces, and teammate Melissa King dished out 19 of the team's 20 assists.
"We played good defense tonight and hit the ball OK," said Seaside coach Jason Boyd. "Passing tonight was not as crisp as it needed to be. We played hard and gave it our best. It just did not work out for us.
"I am very proud of this team," he added. "They have been through a lot and never once did they lose their positive attitude or desire to work together.
"I would trade in league championship teams if I could work with a group like this one every year."
The Gulls finished 15-13 in overall games.
