Will there be a former Warrenton Warrior competing in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece?

Warrenton's Brian Bruney is heading back to Arizona, where the hard-throwing right-hander will compete for the USA Baseball Olympic qualifying team in a number of exhibitions in the Arizona Fall League.

Bruney is one of eight relief pitchers on Team USA Baseball's 30-man roster, which will be cut to 24 Oct. 24.

Beginning Friday, the team will play 12 exhibition games against Arizona Fall League competition, followed by two games with the Canadian national team, Oct. 25 and 27.

Once the Team USA roster is finalized, the squad will play six games in Panama against teams from Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, the Bahamas and Panama.

USA Baseball is coached by Frank Robinson and assisted by Dave Stewart, Thad Bosley and Eddie Rodriguez.

Next year, Robinson will take Team USA to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Bruney is one of three playes from the Pacific Northwest on the current roster, and the only player affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
