WOODBURN - A trip to watch baseball this weekend may be a no-go, as the Astoria team fell short of this year's state playoffs. But sports fans can cheer on Astoria High School's drag racing team as students speed around the track at Woodburn this weekend.

The Woodburn Dragstrip's high school series continues at 8 a.m. Sunday. The top two teams will advance to the Summit Racing Series Finals in September.

Astoria High's team raced to a third-place finish at the series' last meet earlier this month, with students Anthony Tussing and Grady Parker behind the wheel.

The dragsters come from a car club at AHS, but the Pontiac they race belongs to the nonprofit ACTIVE, or Advancing Clatsop Teens in Vocational Education.

Dubbed "Class Act" by the first high school team to race the car, the vehicle recently received a makeover with some local flavor. Astoria students gave it a fresh paint job last week.

The drag racing series begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Woodburn Dragstrip, at 7730 Highway 219 in Woodburn, (503) 982-4461.
