PORTLAND — The Astoria and Seaside cross country teams competed in the Nike Pre Nationals at Portland Meadows Saturday.

Competing on a challenging course in challenging weather, the Fishermen and Gulls ran in the Division 3 Varsity races, and ran well.

Astoria’s highest finish of the day went to Nicholas Long, who placed second out of 155 runners by finishing the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 30 seconds.

Seaside’s Jefferson Farmer was sixth in the same race in 17:44, followed closely by teammate Jackson Januik (ninth, 18:03).

Lowell won the boys’ team championship, with the Gulls sixth and Astoria 11th out of 22 full teams.

On the girls’ side, Charlotte Blakesley of Seaside placed fifth in a personal best of 21:05, with freshman teammate Josie Smith taking 11th in 21:20, in her first 5,000-meter race of the year.

The Seaside girls were 12th in the team standings, ahead of Scappoose (16th) and Banks (18th). McKay was the team champion.

Karla Suarez had the best finish for the Astoria girls (54th, 23:35).

The next race for local teams is Thursday at the Trojan Relays, hosted by St. Helens.
