Seaside High School graduate Ben Archibald signed a free agent contract with the NFL San Francisco 49ers Sunday. Archibald was by-passed in the weekend's draft and will try to gain a roster spot.

Archibald suffered a broken leg and missed the 2002 football season at Brigham Young University.

If he makes the 49ers' roster, Archibald will be the first Seaside player to play in the NFL since Ken Carpenter, who played with the Cleveland Browns.

Ilwaco girls' basketball coach resignsILWACO, Wash. - When the 2003 Ilwaco girls basketball season ended with a loss to Elma in the 2A District Tournament, Coach Joe Williams said, "This program needs a change of direction."

Now Williams has made that happen, turning in his resignation to Activities Director Gary Flood.

Williams will continue to be cross-country and boys track varsity coach.

The past four seasons with Williams at the helm, the Lady Fishermen went to three state tournaments, won a District IV Championship and compiled a 69-31 record.

Williams was State Coach of the Year in 1990 when he coached the IHS boys to second place in class A basketball.

The past season, the Lady Fishermen had a 12-10 record and earned a trip to the 2A District IV tourney. The team ended the season with only eight players on the roster, however, and there were controversies about Williams' coaching style.
